Squirt/10U

WELCOME SQUIRTS AND 10U!

WHERE IS THE SQUIRT/10U IN-HOUSE ONLY OPTION?

After a multi-year pilot with our in-house program, we have decided to merge the "in-house only" option with the Rec League for players at this level who do not wish to travel.  We have also made some improvements in the Rec League so click HERE to find out more!

DO I CHOOSE SQUIRTS OR 10U FOR MY FEMALE PLAYER?

If you didn't know already, the difference between squirt and 10U is that the squirt level is for co-ed play while the 10U level is for girls only.  Girls are able to select which level they would like to participate in during registration but are required to play at the level that they tryout for.  If you are unsure which to choose for your daughter, feel free to contact our Hockey Director, Mike Parnell, at mparnell@westfargohockey.com

SQUIRT/10U LEVEL BORN ON OR AFTER BORN ON OR BEFORE
Date of Birth 06/01/2012 05/31/2014

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • USA Hockey begins classification play at the Squirt and 10U levels to ensure each player is participating at the appropriate level of competition for their skills.   Squirt Levels that are often used are Squirt A, Squirt B1, and Squirt B in North Dakota, while Minnesota and other areas may use Squirt A, Squirt B, Squirt B1, Squirt B2, and Squirt C which equate to our A, B1 and B.  10U levels often used are 10UA and 10UB with similar competition across states.
  • Skaters should have three 45-60 minute practices and up to 4-5 games (individual or tournament) per week.
  • Focus continues on skill development along with improving skating, passing, shooting, positional play and tactical preparation.  Begin official game play with USA Hockey officials and rule application.
  • Coached by parent coaches led by the Hockey Director.
  • Teams will wear assigned home and away travel uniforms and be matching socks for both home and away games.  Skaters will also be given practice/in-house jerseys to use but goalies can come in their own jerseys.   All jerseys given to all players must be returned at the end of the season.
  • Each team has team manager who helps with the off-ice activities such as photo distribution, team parties, etc.  This individual will fulfill their season requirement of 10 dibs (volunteer units) upon successful completion of this role.
  • Each team also has a team scheduler who helps validate game schedules, referee schedules, track scoresheets, etc.  This individual will also fulfill their season requirement of 10 dibs (volunteer units) upon successful completion of this role.
  • Parents/guardians are required to perform off-ice duties on a regular rotation for their team's home games.
  • Travel teams will have a total of 3 tournaments each season.
  • Players on the travel teams cannot participate as well in the Rec League.
  • Evaluations of each player will occur within the first month of in-house and they will be placed on teams with like skills.
  • Goalies become more distinct as they will wear appropriate gear and play in-net for one or more periods per game.
  • Players who commit to playing goaltender at this level will receive a 50% reimbursement on regular registration after 12/31 when they agree to the position.
  • All travel players will participate in an in-house only league that allows players to play with both female and male players before hitting the road for travel games.
